CHARLESTON, SC -- The Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System’s Intensive Care Unit recently received the 2025 Gold Beacon Award for Excellence, one of the highest national honors in critical care nursing, awarded by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.

The Gold Beacon Award recognizes hospitals that demonstrate exceptional patient outcomes, superior quality and safety practices, and a healthy, collaborative work environment. In 2025, fewer than 90 hospitals nationwide, representing roughly the top 25 percent of more than 340 evaluated facilities, earned Gold-level designation. This distinction places the Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System among the nation’s top-performing critical care programs. In South Carolina, just one in four hospitals currently hold this recognition.

“This award is a reflection of the extraordinary dedication and professionalism of our entire ICU team,” said Scott Isaacks, Director and CEO of the Health Care System. “Providing critical care to Veterans requires not only advanced clinical skills, but teamwork, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. This recognition confirms that our ICU consistently delivers care at the highest national standard.”

The Beacon Award for Excellence evaluates units across multiple dimensions, including patient outcomes, nursing competencies, quality improvement initiatives, and workplace culture. Units achieving Gold designation must demonstrate sustained performance in evidence-based practice, patient safety, interdisciplinary collaboration, and staff engagement. The award also highlights environments that support professional growth, teamwork, and retention, which are factors essential to delivering consistent, high-quality critical care.

For Veterans receiving care at the Ralph H. Johnson VA HCS, the Gold Beacon Award represents an important assurance. It signifies that the ICU meets nationally recognized benchmarks for excellence in critical care, ensuring Veterans receive safe, high-quality, and patient-centered care during their most vulnerable moments.

For staff, the award acknowledges the collective effort required to maintain excellence in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment. From bedside nurses and physicians to respiratory therapists, support staff, and leadership, the Gold Beacon Award reflects a shared commitment to continuous improvement and collaboration across disciplines.

“Being the only unit in South Carolina to earn Gold-level Beacon status in 2025 speaks to the extraordinary dedication of our ICU team,” said Andrea Meaburn, RN, lead nurse for the Beacon Award application. “This recognition reflects years of service, specialty certification, strong clinical outcomes, and a culture built on teamwork and trust. Our leadership team provided the support that allowed this work to happen, and several nurses devoted countless hours to completing the application and writing the exemplars. Gold is rare, and this achievement belongs to everyone involved.”

The Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System plans several recognition events to honor ICU staff for this achievement. Nursing leadership will host an onsite luncheon in later this month, with photos taken to commemorate the milestone. Formal recognition, including individual certificates, will take place during the Nursing Awards Ceremony in May. A framed Gold Beacon Award certificate and an official AACN plaque will also be displayed in the ICU as a visible symbol of the unit’s achievement.

The medical center will further share this accomplishment through VA nursing communication channels to highlight the ICU’s success across the Veterans Health Administration.

Earning the Gold Beacon Award for Excellence reinforces Ralph H. Johnson VA’s ongoing commitment to delivering exceptional, Veteran-centered care while fostering a supportive environment for the healthcare professionals who serve them. It stands as a testament to what is possible when clinical expertise, teamwork, and dedication come together in service of Veterans.
