The Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System is a pioneer in the movement to eliminate surgical smoke from operating rooms.

This toxic byproduct of surgical procedures contains numerous harmful chemicals and has been linked to various health issues among healthcare professionals.

The VA's commitment to a smoke-free surgical environment stems from the advocacy of its staff, including nurse Kim Tuemler and Chief of Surgery Dr. Heather Evans. Tuemler, after learning about the dangers of surgical smoke at a conference, spearheaded the effort to implement a smoke-free policy at the VA.

"We felt it was crucial to change our practice and make smoke evacuation devices available in every operation," said Evans. "This protects not only our patients but also everyone working in the operating room."

The VA's proactive approach has positioned it as a leader in South Carolina, where legislation to regulate surgical smoke is still pending. While other hospitals are working towards smoke-free environments, the VA has already established itself as a model for prioritizing the health and safety of its staff and patients.

This accomplishment underscores a broader shift in operating room culture, moving away from a surgeon-dominated hierarchy towards a more collaborative and team-oriented approach. The VA's success demonstrates the power of nurses and other health care professionals advocating for a safer and healthier workplace.

"The best surgical environment is one where we work together as a team to achieve the best outcomes for our patients in the safest way possible," said Evans.

The Ralph H. Johnson VA Health Care System’s commitment to eliminating surgical smoke serves as an innovative keystone for other healthcare facilities and highlights the importance of prioritizing the well-being of everyone in the operating room.
