Columbia VA celebrates America's 250th Anniversary at Freedom 250 Celebration

The Columbia VA Health Care System joined the Columbia VA Regional Office and community partners on June 27, 2026, to host a Freedom 250 Celebration, honoring the generations of Veterans whose service and sacrifice have preserved the freedoms Americans enjoy today.
Held at the Columbia VA Regional Office, the event was presented in partnership with the Columbia VA Health Care System, Columbia VA Regional Office, South Carolina Department of Veterans Affairs, Columbia Vet Center, Fort Jackson National Cemetery, numerous Veteran Service Organizations, and community partners.
The celebration embraced the theme, "Honoring Service, Celebrating Freedom, and Building the Future."
Veterans, families, elected officials, and members of the Columbia community gathered to recognize the men and women whose courage, dedication, and unwavering commitment have strengthened our nation and safeguarded the principles upon which America was founded.
Following a short ceremony, attendees were provided access to Enrollment and Eligibility, Claims Services, Post 9/11 Program, Human Resources, Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Services, and many more VA programs.
"As we commemorate this historic milestone, let us remember that freedom is never guaranteed—it is preserved by generations of Americans willing to answer the call to serve," said Sheila Jackson, Executive Director of the Columbia VA Regional Office. "May we continue to honor their legacy not only today, but every day."
During the ceremony, Jeffrey Soots, Acting Executive Director and CEO of the Columbia VA Health Care System, reflected on another historic milestone occurring this year.
"While our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, the Veterans Health Administration is also celebrating 80 years of caring for America's Veterans," Soots said. "I could not be more proud to be part of an organization whose mission is rooted in service and whose legacy continues to impact millions of Veterans and their families."
Both leaders emphasized that Veterans remain at the heart of everything the Department of Veterans Affairs does.
"If it were not for our Veterans, there would be no need for our organizations," they noted, reaffirming the VA's unwavering commitment to those who have worn the nation's uniform.
As the nation approaches Independence Day, the Freedom 250 Celebration served as a powerful reminder that the liberties Americans enjoy today have been secured by generations of service members whose sacrifices continue to inspire future generations.
The event reinforced the shared commitment of VA and its partners to honor that legacy while continuing to provide exceptional care, benefits, and services to those who have served.
