Columbia VA Charity Ride Marks 25 Years of Supporting Veterans Through Community Commitment

By Wyatt Anthony, Public Affairs Specialist
The Columbia VA Health Care System’s annual Veterans Charity Ride marked a major milestone this year, celebrating 25 years of sustained community support for Veterans and reinforcing a legacy built on service, partnership and impact beyond clinical care.
What began as a grassroots effort has grown into a long-standing tradition that continues to meet the evolving needs of Veterans through meaningful, year-round support.
“Reaching 25 years shows that our commitment has moved beyond one-time gestures to sustained engagement,” said Yolaunda Mincey, chief of Community Development and Civic Engagement at Columbia VAHCS. “It reflects a holistic approach to supporting Veterans and ensuring their needs are met in meaningful ways.”
Significant Impact Through Generosity
During the most recent Charity Ride, organizers received more than $35,000 in monetary donations and $27,000 in non-monetary contributions, allowing the program to provide critical resources to Veterans across the region.
Funds and donated items supported move-in kits for unhoused Veterans, meal vouchers, and emergency food boxes. In addition, remaining funds from 2024 supported the distribution of 395 Thanksgiving boxes and 404 Christmas boxes to Veterans in need.
“For 25 years, the Charity Ride has demonstrated what’s possible when a community comes together in service of Veterans,” said Jeffrey Soots, Columbia VA acting executive director/CEO. “These contributions go far beyond dollars and donations — they represent trust, compassion, and a shared commitment to ensuring Veterans receive support not only in our clinics, but in their daily lives.”
Measurable Results for Veterans
Donations from the Charity Ride continue to generate tangible outcomes. In fiscal year 2025 alone, contributions helped fulfill 2,180 clothing requests, valued at approximately $80,000, and provided 186 move-in kits for unhoused Veterans, with an estimated value of $51,150.
These efforts represent more than numbers, organizers say—they reflect lives improved through access to essential resources and community care.
An Evolving Mission, Veteran-Led at Its Core
Over the past quarter-century, the Charity Ride has evolved to strengthen its impact while remaining true to its mission. Veterans now play an active role not only as recipients of support, but also as partners in creating value for fellow Veterans.
The program has expanded partnerships with local law enforcement, Veteran service organizations, and community charities, strengthening outreach and broadening access to services.
“The Charity Ride is truly an event championed by Veterans for Veterans,” Mincey said. “Community support allows that impact to extend far beyond a single event and resonate throughout the year.”
Community and Volunteer Support Drives Success
Local businesses, civic organizations, and community leaders continue to play a vital role in sustaining the Charity Ride. Their contributions help fund resources, support logistics and expand the event’s reach year after year.
Volunteers also remain central to the program’s success, providing countless hours of service behind the scenes to ensure the event runs smoothly.
“These volunteers are the lifeblood of the Charity Ride,” Mincey said. “Their dedication ensures this tradition continues and that Veterans can rely on it year after year.”
Reflecting VA Values Beyond Clinical Care
Organizers say the success of the Charity Ride reflects the Columbia VA Health Care System’s commitment to serving Veterans beyond medical treatment, guided by its ICARE values — Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect and Excellence.
“The Charity Ride demonstrates our promise that no Veteran is left behind,” Mincey said. “It reflects collaboration, respect for service and a commitment to improving quality of life throughout the year.”
A Lasting Legacy
As the Charity Ride enters its next chapter, organizers emphasize gratitude for those who have supported the event over the past 25 years.
“In a time when division is common, it is inspiring to see people unite for a shared purpose,” Mincey said. “Your commitment has built a lasting legacy that ensures Veterans receive the support they deserve. This milestone belongs to the co-founders, partners, and supporters who have made it possible.”
