The Columbia VA Health Care System Professional Development Council recognized exceptional nurses through its Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring careers marked by sustained excellence, leadership, and meaningful contributions to the nursing profession on May 1, 2026.

The award celebrates nurses whose work has advanced Veteran care, influenced professional practice, and strengthened healthcare systems and communities. It also recognizes qualities that go beyond clinical achievement, including compassion, mentorship, perseverance, and a lasting commitment to advancing nursing.

This year’s recognition is reflected in the careers of Tanya Henry and Laquana Williams, two nurse leaders whose service has significantly shaped care for Veterans.

“Tanya Henry and Laquana Williams bring compassion, clinical expertise, and a deep sense of purpose to every interaction they have with our Veterans,” said Dr. Ruth Mustard, Columbia VA associate director for Patient Care Services. “They are leaders, innovators, and advocates. We congratulate them for being recipients of this prestigious award.”

Henry, associate nurse executive of Outpatient Specialty Care, has devoted nearly 28 years to nursing, including more than 27 years in leadership. Her career has been defined by service, academic achievement, mentorship, and a hands-on commitment to both strategic oversight and clinical care.

Williams, a Columbia VA nurse leader with 19 years of service, has built a reputation for excellence in patient safety, staff retention, and innovation in nursing leadership. Her work in both inpatient and outpatient specialty settings has contributed to stronger teams and better outcomes for Veterans.

Together, their careers reflect the very spirit of the Lifetime Achievement Award: leadership rooted in service, excellence sustained over time, and a deep investment in the people and communities they serve.

On behalf of the Professional Development Council, both honorees are being recognized for careers that continue to leave a lasting mark on nursing and Veteran care.
