Veterans undergoing procedures in the Endoscopy Clinic are required to have a driver accompany them to their procedure and also drive them home.

But arranging for someone to accompany them is not always possible.

“Occasionally, there are Veterans who cannot schedule the procedure because they do not have a driver or support system to accompany and stay with them during and after the procedure,” said Amy Copeland, Advanced MSA for the Tulsa Endoscopy Clinic.

When a female Veteran didn’t have anyone to accompany her, Copeland reached out to the Blue Star Mothers of America Chapter 5 in Broken Arrow to ask if they would help the Veteran.

“Since we needed a female driver for a female Veteran, I decided to call their organization to ask if they might have someone who would be willing to volunteer and they did,” she said.

Paula Normandin, a member of Blue Star Mothers, volunteered to accompany the Veteran.

“The president (of Blue Star Mothers Chapter 5) put a message out and asked if anyone was available and a couple of us (volunteered),” said Normandin, whose son is serving in the Air Force. “I just happened to be the one picked to do it. “I’m retired and able to do things like this.”

Copeland said Endo plans to reach out to more organizations to get more volunteers to assist Veterans.
