Toy & Gift Shop Continues 75-Year Tradition of Supporting Veterans

For more than seven decades, the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) has carried forward a heartfelt holiday tradition that continues to make a meaningful impact on the lives of Veterans and their families.
Their annual Toy & Gift Shop — now in its 75th year — opens its doors each holiday season to help ensure Veterans can provide gifts for the loved ones.
The success of this longstanding event is powered by generosity. Items and funds are donated throughout the year from a wide network of community partners, service organizations, and supporters. These contributions fill the Toy & Gift Shop with a wide variety of presents, giving Veterans the chance to “shop” at no cost for their families.
Jo Anne Cobb, President of ALA Unit 100, has been the driving force behind organizing this event for the past 15 years. During her leadership, she has watched the Toy & Gift Shop expand significantly in both size and reach.
“Every year, it grows, because every year, the community shows its commitment to the Veterans who have served our country,” Cobb shared. “It’s a privilege to help make their holidays brighter.”
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Toy & Gift Shop is that it is open not only to Veterans enrolled in VA care, but also to any Veteran in the community. Those who do not receive care through VA can participate by having a simple form signed by an approved organization such as the Vet Center, St. Francis House, The American Legion, or similar partners.
The American Legion Auxiliary’s mission of “Service, Not Self” resonates strongly throughout this event. Through their steadfast dedication to Veterans, military families, and communities, the ALA helps create a warm, supportive holiday experience that honors service and strengthens community bonds.
As this beloved tradition continues, so does the Auxiliary’s legacy of patriotism, compassion, and unwavering support for Veterans.
