VHSO Pharmacy Shines on the National Stage!

Updated photo.

By Andrew Thompson, Public Affairs Specialist

The Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks (VHSO) Pharmacy Service continues to demonstrate excellence in research, training and clinical care—and now that excellence is being recognized on the national stage!

We are proud to celebrate Drs. Jordan Fischer and Julia Mozes (24–25 PGY1 Pharmacy Residents), alongside Drs. Jennifer Cole, Anna Parker and Jennifer Stark, for their recent research publications in nationally respected journals. Their work was presented earlier this year at the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) Virtual Poster Symposium, and several projects are now published in the Journal of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (JACCP), Menopause and the Annals of Pharmacotherapy.

A Closer Look at the Research:

Multimodal Analgesia in Post-Operative Patients

Drs. Jordan Fischer & Jennifer Cole

Published in JACCP

This study reviewed post-operative pain management in a small rural facility. The team found that 80.3% of patients received non-opioid pain control in alignment with national guidelines—highlighting safe prescribing practices for surgical recovery.

Appropriate Prescribing of Calcium and Vitamin D in Osteoporosis/Osteopenia

Drs. Julia Mozes & Anna Parker

Published in JACCP

This project assessed lab monitoring and supplement use in women with low bone density. Findings emphasized the importance of regular calcium and vitamin D level checks for effective treatment.

Worsening Vasomotor Symptoms with Estradiol and Semaglutide

Dr. Anna Parker

Published in Menopause

A case study of a patient experiencing worsened menopause symptoms while taking semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy). Adjusting the medication titration pace improved symptoms, offering important clinical insight.

GLP-1 Agonists and Bowel Prep Quality in Colonoscopy

Drs. Jennifer Stark & Jennifer Cole

Published in Annals of Pharmacotherapy

A retrospective review revealed that patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists had a higher likelihood of inadequate bowel prep, a key factor affecting the success of lower endoscopy procedures.

A Big Win for VHSO Veterans.

These achievements underscore the strength of VHSO’s Pharmacy Residency Program, the clinical mentorship provided by our preceptors and the drive our team has to improve Veteran care through research and innovation.

Please join us in congratulating these pharmacists on their contributions to both our local system and the national clinical community!
