The Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks (VHSO) took a bold step toward shaping the future of emergency care for Veterans.

The National VA Simulation Learning, Evaluation, Assessment and Research (SimLEARN) team visited VHSO May 20 - 21, transforming the medical center’s auditorium into a full-scale, life-size mockup of the new emergency department (ED) proposed for construction in 2029. This innovative approach allowed staff to physically walk through key areas. The newly proposed areas include the reception, triage and patient care rooms, mirroring the layout of the planned expansion.

During the two-day exercise, staff interacted with the space exactly as they would with patients, providing invaluable feedback on the design. They identified strengths and pinpointed areas needing improvement, ensuring the new ED will be functional, efficient, and, above all, safe.

According to Eric Burns, Executive Director of VHA SimLEARN, “The SimLEARN team assists VAs all over the country by empowering frontline staff to share their valuable input. This collaborative approach ensures that feedback is incorporated into the final product.” Burns continued, “By gathering real-time, practical insights, VHSO is working to create an emergency department that truly meets the needs of Veterans and those who care for them.”

By conducting these test runs well ahead of construction, VHSO demonstrates a commitment to providing the highest quality care and ensuring a safe, effective ED design for years to come. VHSO Chief Nurse for Acute Care, Grant Garrett, emphasized the value of the exercise. "VHSO is engaging in thoughtful, proactive planning to ensure we get it right. Right for Veterans and right for staff.” Garrett continued, “The SimLEARN staff is a valuable resource. Their collaborative approach is instrumental in turning our vision into a truly high-quality healthcare environment.”

As VHSO looks toward 2029 and beyond, this proactive engagement with staff and experts underscores a steadfast commitment to innovation, safety and excellence in Veteran care. By embracing forward-thinking strategies and prioritizing real-world feedback, VHSO is not just building a new ED, they are building a brighter, healthier future for those who have served.
