Fayetteville VA recognizes hospitalized Veterans during National Salute to Veteran Patients week

PRESS RELEASE

February 13, 2023

Fayetteville , NC — All facilities with the Fayetteville NC VA Coastal Health Care System will recognize and honor our Veteran patients from Feb. 12-18 during National Salute to Veteran Patients week.

Since 1978, VA has used the week of Valentine’s Day to provide a weeklong commemoration for Veterans. Local commemoration efforts include sharing valentines, cards, blankets and other items donated by local community and Veteran service organizations, special celebration meals, music and other activities.

“Every day we honor our Veteran patients,” said Marri Fryar, Interim Executive Director, Fayetteville NC VA Coastal Health Care System. “During National Salute of Veteran Patients week, we invite our communities all across Southeastern North Carolina to join us as we pay tribute to America’s heroes – the men and women we proudly care for and serve. We are also appreciative of the daily support we receive from organizations and volunteers across the region,” Fryar added.

According to Sharon Henderson, Chief, Center for Development and Community Engagement, which manages the volunteer program, volunteers do the endless list of jobs that are necessary in caring for Veterans.  “They read to patients, provide transportation and entertainment; and further offer respite for caregivers, coaching, friendship, or sometimes the value of a volunteer is as simple as the offer of a sympathetic ear.”
