On a routine morning at the VA Fayetteville Coastal Health Care System, the Valet Services staff demonstrated remarkable vigilance and swift action that turned a potential crisis into a story of hope and gratitude.

It all started when a Veteran drove his vehicle into the valet entrance of the Fayetteville Health Care Center. His pale skin and unsteady demeanor quickly drew the attention of Terry Nichols, a valet attendant recognized for his keen observational abilities. Noticing that something was wrong, Terry approached the car and urged the Veteran to pull over to a safer spot.

“After seeing and speaking with the Veteran, I immediately knew something was wrong and that the gentleman needed emergency assistance” Terry recalled, while noting that he knew he, himself needed to remain calm while operating with urgency. As the Veteran complied, Terry quickly assessed the situation. Recognizing the signs of a medical emergency, he signaled to his colleague, Robert Vasquez, to alert emergency personnel. Without hesitation, Robert sprinted inside to alert police and emergency personnel.

Within minutes, a team of first responders rushed to the scene. They stabilized the Veteran and transported him to a nearby emergency department for critical care. Meanwhile, the valet team ensured the Veteran’s vehicle was safely moved to the facility’s parking lot, secured it until his return.

The story didn’t end there. Days later, the Veteran walked back into the VA Fayetteville Coastal Health Care System, restored to health. With heartfelt gratitude, he retrieved his vehicle and thanked Terry, Robert, and the entire valet team. “You all saved my life,” he said, shaking their hands.

Ra'Mir Harrell, Valet Services On-Site Supervisor, reflected on the incident with pride. “This is what we’re here for—to serve Veterans in every way, as safely as possible. Terry and Robert didn’t just do their jobs; they acted with compassion and urgency. Their teamwork made all the difference.”

The incident underscores the vital role of frontline staff at VA Fayetteville Coastal. Their quick thinking, training, and dedication to Veterans’ well-being exemplify the spirit of care that defines the health care system.

“We’re family here,” Robert added. “When a Veteran needs us, we move mountains.”

Thanks to the valet team’s swift actions, a life was saved, and a Veteran received the timely care he deserved, a testament to the power of vigilance, teamwork, and unwavering commitment to those who served.

The VA Fayetteville Coastal Health Care System commends its Valet Services staff for their exceptional service and reminds all Veterans that their safety and health remain our highest priority.
