PRESS RELEASE

May 31, 2024

Los Angeles , CA — On Friday, May 31, 2024, VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (VAGLAHS) celebrated a joint groundbreaking ceremony for Buildings 158 and 210 on the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center campus.

The Veterans Collective (Century Housing, Thomas Safran & Associates, U.S.VETS) along with federal, state, and elected officials were on hand for this significant event which marked the commencement of two new supportive housing developments that will provide a total of 87 new units on campus for Veterans experiencing homelessness.

Building 158 will offer 49 units of permanent supportive housing and was developed by Century Housing. Building 210 developed by U.S. VETS, will offer 38 units of permanent supportive housing primarily intended for women Veterans. With a focus on accessibility, comfort, and fostering a sense of community, these residential developments represent a major step forward to ensure that Veterans residing at the VA West LA Campus receive the care, services, and ongoing support they deserve.

"Our groundbreaking ceremony today is a testament to our unwavering commitment to honoring Veterans by fulfilling our promise to end Veteran homelessness," said VAGLAHS Interim Medical Center Director Robert Merchant. "By providing housing options to Veterans who are at risk of homelessness, we are creating environments where Veterans can thrive, connect, and rebuild their lives."

The groundbreaking ceremony serves as a symbolic representation of progress and renewal, signaling a new chapter in the ongoing effort to honor and support Veterans. At present, four buildings host a combined 233 units of permanent supportive housing on this campus.

Construction is underway for another 374 units, scheduled to be ready within the next year. Once the two buildings are finished, there will be a total of 768 apartment units available for formerly homeless Veterans at West LA VA Medical Center, surpassing the halfway point toward our Master Plan goal of at least 1,200.

The new housing development will feature a range of amenities and services designed to promote independence, well-being, and a sense of belonging among residents. These include accessible design features, communal spaces and comprehensive support services addressing healthcare, counseling, employment assistance, and community engagement programs.
