Effective Aug 5, 2024, Dr. Michael Amendola is the Acting Chief of Surgery at the Hampton VA Healthcare System.
Dr. Michael Amendola is the Chief of Vascular Surgery, Director of the Non-Invasive Vascular Lab and Program Director for the Chief Resident in Quality and Patient Safety at the Richmond VA Health Care System. He is a Professor of Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and Adjunct Faculty at Johns Hopkins School of Education. As a Senior Innovation Fellow, Dr. Amendola created a local 3D Printing (3DP) for pre-surgical planning curriculum for surgeons and contributed to launching a national VHA training course to introduce healthcare teams to 3DP technology. He is the program director of the Office of Advance Manufacturing's Central Virginia VA Health Care System based 3DP Surgical Fellowship. His interests focus on mentoring novice surgical learners, hemodialysis access, 3D printing and implications of surgical simulation in the current health care environment.
Dr. Michael Amendola received his medical degree at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine (VCU-SOM) in Richmond, Virginia. He completed his general surgery internship and residency at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System (VCUHS) in 2007. He also completed a Vascular Surgery fellowship at VCUHS in 2009. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Vascular Surgery. In 2021 he was inducted into the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators. Dr. Amendola is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in both general and vascular surgery. He maintains privileges at Central Virginia VA Health Care System in Richmond, Virginia and is Professor of Surgery at VCU-SOM. He completed his Master’s degree in medical education at John Hopkins School of Education in Baltimore, Maryland in 2019.
