Dr. Robert Bates MD was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff at the Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center on June 11, 2017.
Dr. Bates has 37 years of civil service experience to include over 30 years active duty in the Army and Air Force, five years with Indian Health Service and now currently as a Veterans Affairs employee. As the Deputy Chief of Staff, Dr. Bates is responsible for providing support to the Medical Center Chief of Staff in a variety of oversight functions that include the provision of clinical services in the outpatient, inpatient, residential and long-term care settings. The Hampton VAMC offers treatment in primary and subspecialty care, intensive care, mental health, spinal cord injury, geriatrics & extended care, hospice care, and other clinical services both within and outside the medical center. Bates brings to the VA mission a sense of purpose and drive to excel that is fundamental to providing quality, timely and accessible care to this nation’s veterans at a time when needed most, while maintaining the ICARE principles of integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect and excellence
