Taking it off…Keeping it Off

With VA’s MOVE! Program

Would you like to go from 230 pounds to 168 pounds? And keep it off? Veteran Joe Rizza did with VA’s MOVE! program. Read his great story.

MOVE! is VA’s national weight management program for Veterans.

Vietnam Vet Steven Boigon lost 150 pounds on the program. He managed his weight okay when he was in the Air Force, but after he left the service he started to put on the pounds. Sound familiar? Read how he took off the weight (pdf).

MOVE! can help you lose weight, keep it off and improve your health.

Sonya Gaines, a Veteran of the Air Force and Army, grew from 141 to 250 pounds after retiring. She had diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, bad knees and arthritis. See how MOVE! saved her.

Contact your nearest VA facility to inquire about their MOVE! program.

“The MOVE! folks made me feel good when I succeeded and supported me, but didn’t coddle me.”

— Joe Rizza

One of the most dramatic stories of the success of the MOVE! program is that of Ernie Lohmann who lost 225 pounds. Ernie has been able to discontinue all three of his diabetes medications, moves more easily and sleeps better. Read how Ernie (pdf) achieved his “whole new life.”

The MOVE! Program has been designed for both men and women and for Veterans of all ability levels.

The MOVE!23 is a 23-item questionnaire that asks about your weight, health, prior attempts at weight loss, and your individual issues with losing weight and becoming more physically active.

The questionnaire results in a 4-6 page report that is individualized for you.

A list of recommended MOVE! handouts is provided with the report. The handouts contain information on:

  • Nutrition
  • Physical Activity
  • Healthy Behavior Change

While only Veterans receiving care in the VA can enroll in the MOVE! program, the MOVE!23 questionnaire can be taken by anyone. You can take this report to your health care provider for further advice on weight management.
