Trauma-Informed Care: Awareness and Education in Homeless Programs

Trauma-Informed Care: Awareness and Education in Homeless Programs

In Fiscal Year (FY) 2014, the Center moved forward with the launch of Trauma Informed Care (TIC) for homeless Veterans. This process evolved through discussions with VA and community homeless Veteran teams and leaders, the review of research, and the review of current models of Trauma Informed Care. Other contributions to this launch included the Center development and publishing of a Trauma Informed Care fact sheet. Building on these concepts, in late FY 2014, “Trauma Informed Care: A Paradigm Shift Needed for Services With Homeless Veterans,” was published, reinforcing the evidence between trauma and homelessness and the need for further evolution of trauma informed services for homeless Veterans.

In order to introduce this concept to VA providers, two national VeHU presentations were planned and conducted. The first presentation reviewed Veteran homelessness, trauma exposure, PTSD and creating trauma informed environments that lead homeless Veterans toward recovery. The second presentation was a panel discussion on implications for homeless populations and developing trauma informed organizations.

The launch of Trauma-Informed Care for homeless Veterans has drawn interest within VA and community programs serving homeless Veterans, including the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans. The Center developed a series of Webinars on Trauma Informed Care for FY 2015, based on program needs including: case mismanagement, environment of care; peers and community relationship; and special consideration or populations. Working with the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans and VA Homeless Programs Office, the Center developed these presentations to assure relevance for both VA staff and community partners.
