Houston VA Sees Record-Breaking Surge in Veterans Enrolling for Health Care
PRESS RELEASE
August 21, 2026
Houston, TX - More than 13,000 new patients enrolled so far this fiscal year…and Houston VA is expanding to welcome more.
The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and its network of 11 community-based outpatient clinics, collectively known as Houston VA Health Care System, is experiencing an unprecedented wave of new Veteran enrollments.
For over a year, the Houston VA has averaged more than 1,000 new Veteran patients enrolling for health care every month. But in July, that number surged to a record-breaking 1,400 new Veterans enrolling for care in a single month, the highest monthly total in the facility's history. So far this fiscal year, more than 13,000 new patients have enrolled for care at Houston VA, more than any other VA facility nationwide.
"We are thrilled that an ever-growing number of Veterans are taking advantage of the exceptional care we provide," said Houston VA Executive Director Amir Farooqi. "Texas continues to see significant population growth, and more Veterans are choosing to call this region home. At the same time, we've ramped up our outreach efforts to make sure Veterans in our community know that high-quality, convenient health care is available to them. It is our honor to serve them."
A System Recognized for Excellence
The growth in enrollment comes as Houston VA continues to earn national recognition for the quality of care it delivers. The facility holds a five-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and in 2026, Houston VA became the first VA medical center in the nation to be verified through the American College of Surgeons Quality Verification Program, reflecting its achievement of rigorous national standards in surgical care.
Houston VA is also the only VA medical center in the country to be Magnet-designated for nursing excellence five times, a distinction awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center to recognize outstanding nursing care. The facility remains committed to investing in the latest medical technology to support its expanding patient population.
Expanding to Meet Growing Demand
To accommodate its rapidly growing number of new Veteran enrollees, Houston VA has launched an extensive expansion plan across the greater Houston region:
- Galveston - A new, modern VA clinic opened in March 2026.
- Beaumont and Rosenberg - New clinics are currently under construction.
- Conroe, Humble, Texas City and Katy - Plans are underway for larger clinics with additional service expansions.
- New Community Living Centers being planned in Conroe and Katy
- Main medical center - Expansion and parking planning is also in progress at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center campus.
In addition to expanding and adding additional facilities, Houston VA has implemented extended hours at many of its outpatient clinics and is actively hiring additional staff to meet the growing need.
"We are committed to meeting the needs of our growing number of Veterans and we can't wait to welcome them," Farooqi said.
