Dr. Marla Weiss, DNP, FNP-BC

Dr. Marla Weiss, DNP, FNP-BC, is MEDVAMC’s new acting Associate Director for Patient Care Services.

She has over 20 years of experience serving Veterans in various leadership roles across Veterans Integrated Services (VISN) 22, one of the largest patient care workforces, which operates with a multi-billion-dollar budget. This workforce consists of eight medical VA center facilities and 65 community clinics, providing care to over 1.5 million Veterans in Arizona, New Mexico, and Southern California.

Dr. Weiss’s career began with the VA Long Beach Healthcare System in 2005 as a Nurse Practitioner and progressed through various leadership roles directing organized patient care services, operations, and executive management programs as Deputy Associate Director for Patient Care Services and Acting Associate Director for Patient Care Services, including VA Long Beach Healthcare System, VA Greater Los Angeles, and VA San Diego Healthcare System. Most recently served as Acting Chief Nurse Officer for VISN 22. These experiences have fostered a passion for continuous learning and process improvement to build high-reliability organizations.

As a dynamic, collaborative, and experienced nurse leader, Dr. Weiss has a skillset in special detail assignments and joining high-level organizations during periods of critical transitions and change, embracing innovations, sensitivity to operations, employee engagement, and cultivating a culture of safety and excellence in Veterans care. With the most recent Los Angeles wildfires, Dr. Weiss was instrumental as part of the Incident Command team supporting vital services and access to care to the surrounding impacted VA communities.

Dr. Weiss has an outstanding academic background that includes a Bachelor’s degree in Science Nursing from California State University, Fullerton (2001), a Master of Science in Nursing from the Nurse Practitioner Program of the University of California at Los Angeles (2003), and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from the University of San Diego, California (2013). Dr. Weiss has countless hands-on clinical and healthcare systems experiences that allow her to continuously serve as an advocate for Veterans and the VHA Mission of improving access and patient care outcomes.
