PGY1 Pharmacy Resident

VA Houston health care

Mario Gutierrez, PharmD, is a PGY1 Pharmacy Resident at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center.

  • Hometown: Houston, Texas
  • Education: University of Houston College of Pharmacy (Houston, TX)
  • Research: Evaluation of statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS) in patients initiated on statin therapy while simultaneously repleting vitamin D levels at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center
  • Why VA Houston: As I sought residency programs, my primary goal was to find an institution that would allow me to make meaningful contributions to the Houston communities while offering diverse experiences and providing support to its residents. The PGY1 program at the VA Houston provides that and much more. Its residents have the opportunity to practice in a variety of outpatient and inpatient specialties ranging from home-based primary care to surgery and from community living centers to academia. Additionally, the ability to practice as an integrated and valued member of the interdisciplinary teams allows me to continue to advocate for the profession!
