A Stunning New Beachfront VA Clinic for Veterans
By Maureen Dyman, Communications Director
Picture this: you walk into your doctor’s appointment, and through the window, there’s the Gulf of Mexico sparkling back at you.
That’s not a dream — that’s the brand-new VA outpatient clinic at 500 Seawall Blvd. in Galveston, Texas and it officially celebrated its grand opening last Friday morning in style.
With the sound of crashing waves as a backdrop and warm Gulf Coast sunshine pouring down, Veterans, city leaders and VA officials gathered near Stewart Beach to toast a major upgrade for the roughly 4,000 Veterans the clinic serves across Galveston County.
“This is 8,000 square feet of health care goodness,” said Lindsey Crain, interim medical center director of the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston. “It’s right across the street from the beach — who wouldn’t want to work or receive care here?”
She’s not wrong.
From Bahama Buck’s to Brand New
The clinic moved into what was formerly a Bahama Buck’s shaved ice restaurant — proving that sometimes the sweetest transformations come in unexpected packages. The old clinic location, just a few miles away, had run its course when the lease expired, and this beachfront upgrade is a serious improvement. Think more parking (all to themselves!), bigger treatment rooms, improved air conditioning, and yes, those ocean views.
“Together, we’re not just opening a clinic — we’re opening doors to a brighter, healthier future for our Veterans,” Crain said.
The clinic has been quietly serving patients since Feb. 23, but Friday was the moment to make it official and celebrate the people who make it matter.
Care That Comes to You
For Veterans on Galveston Island, getting quality health care doesn’t mean making a 50-mile trek to Houston. The new clinic brings primary care, mental health services, women’s health, laboratory work, prosthetics, rehabilitation and more right to the island — close to home, close to the people who love them.
About 20 dedicated staff members are on hand to make sure every visit feels less like a medical appointment and more like a community..
Seeing Every Veteran
One of the most special moments of the grand opening ceremony came from John Bartrum, under secretary for health at the VA, who made a point of speaking directly to women Veterans — the fastest-growing group in the Veteran community.
“I want our women Veterans to know that we see them and we know they’re there,” he said.
With more than 160,000 Veterans registered for healthcare, the Houston VA’ system’s population of women Veterans has more than doubled in the last six years and is projected to continue to increase at a high rate. The new Galveston clinic is equipped and committed to meeting the needs of women Veterans — because every Veteran deserves to feel seen.
Built on History, Open for the Future
Galveston itself has warrior DNA. From the early days of the Republic of Texas to World War II, when island forces kept watch for German U-boats prowling the Gulf, Galveston island has always stood on the front lines.
“This island’s history is written in more than just salt and sand,” said Fernando Rivera, director of the South Central VA Health Care Network. “It was written with the steel and strength of the American Veteran. We honor the legacy of those battles not with a fortress, but with a foundation of care.”
And the Veterans who showed up for the grand opening on Friday? They felt it.
“This clinic is beautiful,” said Army veteran C.T. “Chuck” Lince, beaming. “I’m very proud of Galveston.”
Air Force Vietnam Veteran James Fincher, who has been a patient at both the old clinic and the new one, summed it up perfectly as he stepped back out into the sunshine.
“It’s such a warm feeling,” he said.
With the Gulf breeze at their backs and a beautiful new VA facility in front of them, Galveston’s Veterans have every reason to feel exactly that.
