In February 2024, Houston VA opened a Community Resource and Referral Center (CRRC), a one-stop shop to provide critical assistance to homeless Veterans and those at risk for becoming homeless.

Since that time, the center has assisted more than 6,000 Veterans which includes housing for 985 Veterans in 2025. The center also provides showers, laundry, food, job placement, health and mental health care, career development, and access to VA and non-VA benefits.

“Located in the heart of the city, close to public transportation, our facility is a place of refuge and support for Veterans,’ said Emily Winfield, CRRC Director. “Veterans fought for our country, and now it’s our turn to fight for them”.

Navy Veteran Cecil Reedy, formerly homeless, is one of the more than 6,000 Veterans who has received support at the CRRC.

“It took me two years to come here,” said Reedy, who provided maintenance for naval aircraft during his time in the Navy.I had a friend who asked me every day to come to the CRRC. He said ‘they’ll help you get back on your feet. They’ll help you with housing.”

CRRC staff got Reedy into housing and connected him with the Transitional Work program, which places Veterans in time-limited work assignments in the community.

“CRRC staff go the extra mile for you,” he said. “They helped me get back to the person I was before. Now that they have helped me with everything, I volunteer at the CRRC to give back and help out other Veterans.”

While VA has robust services, VA can also lean on the Houston community for support. The CRRC provides referrals to many community partners to assist with housing. Several community partners also have a permanent presence at CRRC to provide information to Veterans about their services.

“VA and our community partners are passionate about uplifting Veterans, removing barriers to homelessness and helping them sustain permanent housing,” said Winfield. “We are proud to be part of a community that cares so much about Veterans.”
