Houston VA Pioneers New Immunotherapy for Veterans Battling Bladder Cancer

By Maureen Dyman, Communications Director
In a groundbreaking move for Veterans' healthcare, doctors at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center recently began offering a revolutionary new immunotherapy treatment for bladder cancer.
Army Veteran Ervin Green was the first to receive ANKTIVA®, a therapy that harnesses the power of the immune system to target and destroy cancer cells.
“This new treatment gives me a lot of hope, and I know that with the help of my VA doctors, I am going to be okay,” Green said.
At 71 years old, Green’s health journey has been marked by resilience, faith, and determination. Since proudly serving in the Persian Gulf War, he has faced significant health challenges, including prostate cancer and kidney issues. After enduring a stroke, he fought hard to relearn how to walk and has battled bladder cancer for the past few years.
“I’ve been through some tough times, but I’m determined to keep pushing forward,” he said. “I owe a lot to God, my family, and the VA. I’m fortunate to have all this support.”
Nationally recognized urologic oncologists at the Houston VA, Dr. Jeffrey Jones and Dr. Jennifer Taylor, were instrumental in bringing this new treatment to Veterans. They are strong advocates for advancing care for those battling bladder cancer.
“The immune stimulation in ANKTIVA® represents a significant advancement in treatment options for veterans,” Jones said. “New immunotherapies are crucial for improving outcomes in Veterans with cancer, and I’m proud that Houston VA is leading the way in making it available to our patients.”
According to Jones, Veterans are more likely than non-Veterans to be diagnosed with bladder cancer, making this treatment especially vital for those at the VA.
“Veterans deserve access to cutting-edge therapies, and it’s our honor to ensure they receive it,” he said.
As the first recipient of this innovative treatment, Green stands as a symbol of hope for fellow Veterans facing similar battles. Walking through the Urology Clinic, he is well-known among Veterans and the VA staff. His courage in the face of adversity inspires many, and he hopes that his experience with ANKTIVA will encourage others to seek the care they need.
“There is help out here for Veterans,” he said. “The important thing is not to give up.”
