Ten extraordinary World War II Veterans were honored for their service at a special birthday party at the VA Clinic in Beaumont, Texas today. Each of the Veterans is at least 100 years old or is reaching that remarkable milestone in 2026.

The birthday party is an annual event, initiated by Myia Barton, a passionate VA social worker at the clinic, and aims to ensure that these heroes are celebrated and remembered.

The inspiration for the birthday party came from a conversation Barton had a couple of years ago with a Veteran who expressed his loneliness as he approached his centennial birthday. Determined to change that narrative, Barton has turned this intimate celebration into an annual uplifting tradition that brings joy and camaraderie to these distinguished Veterans.

“It is truly our honor to serve these special Veterans,” Barton said.  “Being able to celebrate their birthdays with them every year and shower them with thanks and recognition, is truly a pleasure.”

Among the honorees was Vernon Chauvin, a proud Marine from Port Arthur, Texas. Born on December 23, 1926, Chauvin served in both World War II and the Korean War. After two active-duty stints, he became a gunner and later a machine gun squad leader. With a career spanning 38 years at Jefferson Chemical, Chauvin shared many stories of duty and sacrifice with his fellow Veterans at the party. “I’m grateful to be here, and I look forward to turning 100 this December,” he said smiling from ear to ear.

Joining him was Joe Escamilla, also 99, who served in the Army’s 82nd Airborne. A paratrooper and glider pilot during World War II, Escamilla regaled the attendees at the party with his many adventures, including capturing a German general and his colorful life as a boxer in the military. He looked forward to celebrating his upcoming 100th birthday in September, saying, “This party means a lot to me, and I can’t wait to celebrate!”  After his service, Mr. Escamilla had 7 children, including two sets of twins.

One of the oldest Veterans present was Joseph Joseph, who at 103 has seen the world through the eyes of a merchant seaman. His service extended through THREE wars: World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam. “It’s an honor to be recognized like this,” he stated, reflecting on his extensive journey while proudly sharing about his family and the love he has for them.  After serving as a “mess man”, cook, and then chief, Mr. Joseph came home, got married and had four children with his wife of 58+ years.

During the party, the Veterans exchanged stories of bravery and camaraderie, each filled with a sense of pride and connection to one another. Local Boy Scouts and community groups contributed to the celebration by presenting handmade gifts and local Veterans service organizations were on hand to celebrate the Veterans.

Lindsey Crain, Interim Medical Center Director of the Houston VA, spent time meeting each of the Veterans at the party.   “It’s such a joy for us at the VA to honor and recognize our Veterans in this way,” she said.   “Their sacrifices resonate through generations, and we’re proud to celebrate their incredible lives and their service to our country.”

This event at the Beaumont VA Clinic was more than just a birthday party; it was a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifice that these Veterans represent.

Houston VA wishes each of the Veterans a happy birthday and thanks them for their service!
