David Matthews MD

Dr. Matthews is originally from Bangor, Maine, and earned his undergraduate degree in Biology from Purdue University in 1980, M.D. from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1984, attended Internship and Residency in General Surgery at the Indiana University Medical Center from 1984 – 1989, and has been board certified in General Surgery since 1990.

He was appointed as a Staff Surgeon and Assistant Chief of Surgery Service of the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in 2001, and was also appointed as the Acting Chief of Surgery and Chief of Surgery in 2015.  Dr. Matthews has been the Designated Education Officer, Associate Chief of Staff for Education since June 2019.  Effective June 19, 2022, Dr. Matthews was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff at Veteran Health Indiana.

Over his years of service he has received numerous awards and honors, and in commemoration of his 11 straight years of receiving a teaching award, the Indiana University Surgery Department in 2014 named the award after him.  Dr. Matthews has been a teacher, supervisor, and mentor of medical students and residents in Surgery in several countries around the world
