Not all therapists carry clipboards, some carry tennis balls.

At the Roudebush VA Medical Center, one of our most beloved therapists has spent the past 7 years offering comfort in exchange for head scratches and belly rubs.
Panda, a certified therapy dog, is retiring this month after more than 7 years of service. As a Newfoundland, which are known for their breed’s long history of hard work, Panda proudly added “therapy dog” to her résumé in May 2018 as she went on to become Roudebush’s longest serving four legged volunteers. 1 of only 3 certified therapy dogs at the medical center, Panda has spent most of her time visiting Veterans at Roudebush. But her impact reached far beyond its walls. She also brought comfort to children and families at Riley Children’s Hospital and local libraries throughout the community.
Panda never worked alone though. Her handler and “mom”, Vicki Peterson Rieskamp, was by her side for every visit. Asked what she cherished most about their time together, Rieskamp said she loved “seeing how happy people are when they see Panda.” She also added, “Panda has been part of so many magical moments. From Veterans spending their final moments petting her, to children who just had brain surgery saying their first words.”.
As Panda begins a well-earned retirement, we celebrate the comfort, smiles and unforgettable moments she has shared. With her calm presence and endless love, Panda helped brighten the days of more than 28,000 people.
