A Lifetime of Service and Strength

Veteran Henderson Smith

By Camille Weston, Public Affairs Officer

There are lives that quietly shape the world around them, and then there is the life of Dr. Robert Henderson Smith, Sr.

At 104 years old, he continues to inspire everyone he meets with his wisdom, humility, and unwavering belief in the power of education and service. Born on May 9, 1921, on the Burks Plantation near Rayville, Louisiana, Dr. Smith grew up in a time and place where opportunity was scarce. Through resilience, faith, and determination, he charted a path that would carry him far beyond the boundaries of his early life.

His journey took him from the fields of a plantation to the front lines of World War II, where he served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946. As a Chief Warrant Officer in the 500 Port Battalion, he supported Allied operations in Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, and France. His steady hand and dependable leadership helped shape the success of missions that changed the course of history.

A Legacy Built Through Education and Community

Returning home with a renewed sense of purpose, Dr. Smith dedicated more than fifty years to higher education. He poured his energy into roles at Florida A&M University, Jackson State University, and Tougaloo College, where he served as a professor and dean. Students and colleagues remember him not only for his intellect but also for his compassion, guidance, and belief in the power of learning to transform lives.

His commitment to civic engagement is equally inspiring. In 2020, at the age of 99, Dr. Smith cast his ballot in the general election and reflected on his journey with the simple but powerful words, “I remember when I couldn’t vote.” That moment captured both the trials he endured and the progress he lived to see.

A Ceremony Filled with Gratitude

During the 2025 Wall of Honor Ceremony at the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center, Dr. Smith was honored alongside seven remarkable Veterans whose stories strengthen and uplift the Veteran community. This year’s class also included Dr. David M. Walker (U.S. Air Force), Dexter Marvell Brookins (U.S. Army), John J. Pitchford, Jr. (U.S. Air Force), Jeffrey Adams (U.S. Army), Joe Albert Dettor (U.S. Army), Lucius Wright (U.S. Army), and Kayla Michelle Riggs (U.S. Army). Together, their service spans from World War II to modern operations, showcasing generations of courage and leadership.

Executive Director Michael B. Renfrow, FACHE, reflected on Dr. Smith’s influence with deep appreciation. “Every time I hear Dr. Smith speak about his life, I am reminded of the strength and resilience within our Veteran community. His story is one that stays with you.”

In the coming weeks, Dr. Smith’s plaque will be added to the Wall of Honor outside the Veterans Canteen Service Retail Store, ensuring his story continues to inspire everyone who walks these halls.
