At the G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center, meaningful moments often unfold in familiar places, including the Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) Café where Veterans and staff gather each day for coffee, conversation, and connection.

One of the regulars who brightens the café is Mr. W. L. Stribling, a U.S. Army Veteran.

Mr. Stribling is known for his friendly visits and for the pride he carries in his military service. During several of his coffee stops, he mentioned that his Korean War Veteran hat had seen its better days. The hat was important to him and reflected not only his service but also the memories and identity that come with it.

VCS Assistant Chief Norman “Rocky” Garrard listened and wanted to do something meaningful for him. Rocky made it his mission to find a replacement hat that Mr. Stribling could wear with pride. When he located a new Korean War Era Veteran hat and presented it to him, the gesture offered a sincere expression of gratitude for Mr. Stribling’s service.

Mr. Stribling’s smile made the moment unforgettable.

This small exchange captures the spirit of our VA community. Every day, our staff look for ways to show Veterans that their service matters and that they are valued. Rocky’s thoughtful action is one example of how our team continues to support and appreciate the Veterans who walk through our doors.
