Jackson VA Earns Four-Star CMS Rating, Highest in Metro Area

By Camille Weston, Public Affairs Officer
The G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center has been recognized with a four-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in the 2025 hospital quality ratings, making it the highest-rated hospital in the Jackson metro area.
CMS ratings are based on five categories — mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care. The four-star achievement highlights the Jackson VA’s success in improving access, safety, and quality for the Veterans it serves.
Over the past year, the medical center has introduced major improvements:
- Reduced wait times by as much as 85% in key specialties.
- Saved millions through pharmacy initiatives and nursing restructuring.
- Expanded technology and services, including Mississippi’s first leadless pacemaker.
- Earned a five-star rating for its Community Living Center.
- Exceeding goals in housing Veterans experiencing homelessness and supporting justice-involved Veterans.
“This four-star rating highlights the excellent care the G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center provides,” said Michael B. Renfrow, Medical Center Director. “Our job is to continue raising the bar for customer service and convenience throughout the department, so Jackson VA works better for the Veterans, families, caregivers, and survivors we proudly serve.”
The recognition comes as part of broader national improvements across VA health care. In fiscal year 2025, VA has expanded clinics, accelerated claims processing, housed more than 37,000 homeless Veterans, and offered nearly one million extended-hours appointments to improve access nationwide.
