Meet the Associate Chief of Staff for Primary Care - Dr. Vicky McLean

Dr. McLean

At VA, we take a team approach to health care—with you at the center. Research shows this kind of approach leads to better quality care, more satisfied patients, and fewer hospital visits.

Primary Care operates under the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) Model. This care involves each Veteran working together with health care professionals to plan for the whole-person care and life-long health and wellness.

The focus is on the following:

  • Partnerships with the veteran and health care team.
  • Access to health care with scheduled visits with other members of your team, access to group information on the web through MyHealtheVet, and communication with members of the PACT by telephone or through Secure Messaging via MyHealtheVet.
  • Coordinated care through collaboration and building trust, personal relationships and coordination of all aspects of your health care.
  • Team approach. You are the center of the care team that also includes your family members, caregivers, and your health care professionals—primary care provider, nurse care manager, clinical associate, and administrative clerk. When other services are needed to meet your goals and needs, another care team may be called in.

  1. Can you tell me a little about yourself? I am an Internist and Geriatrician, Certified Medical Director, and Hospice Medical Director.  I live in Florence with my husband, and we have five children and four grandchildren.
  2. Tell me how you came to work at the VA? I completed my Geriatric Fellowship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and part of my training was conducted at the G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center. Here is where I had some of my best mentors even to this day. Also, I have several family members who have served in the military. Throughout my career I was able to progress in different leadership positions. My last position as Corporate Medical Director involved extensive traveling that kept me away from my family. When this opportunity presented at the VA, I applied because I felt as though I would be returning to my roots and serving our Veterans.
  3. How long have you worked for VA, and what roles have you had at the VA? I have worked for VA for three months.
  4. How does serving Veterans each day impact you personally? Each day I am reminded that the   personal liberties I have are due to a Veteran’s sacrifice and can never be taken for granted.
  5. What is an interesting fact that many do not know about you? I love antique vehicles and own a '62 Chevy Impala.
  6. What do you do for fun? I enjoy completing woodworking projects.
  7. Are you a Veteran? If so, what branch of service. No, I am not a Veteran.
