Meet the HUD-VASH Supervisor - Derrick Moore

- Can you tell me a little about yourself? I was born in Chicago, Illinois but raised in Jackson, Mississippi. I’m the youngest of four siblings and the first of my siblings to earn a master's degree. I am married to the love of my life, and we have three children. Our son is 7 years old, and our twin daughters are 5 years old.
- Tell me how you came to work at the VA? I’ve worked in the field of Social Work since 2001. My past work experience includes working with non-profit agencies as a Counselor and Therapist. My brother who worked at the VA encouraged me to apply.
- How long have you worked for VA, and what roles have you had at the VA? I have worked at the VA for the past 15 years. During this time, I have worked as an Outreach Social Worker, HUD-VASH Coordinator and at present as the HUD-VASH Supervisor.
- How does serving Veterans each day impact you personally? Helping an individual that served our country navigate from a homeless situation to obtaining permanent housing is rewarding and motivates me to be an even stronger advocate for the Veteran population.
- What is an interesting fact that many do not know about you? I am a true fan of the TV series the Walking Dead.
- What do you do for fun? I truly enjoy spending time with my family and playing ball with my son.
- Are you a Veteran? If so, what branch of service. No, I am not a Veteran.
The ongoing affordable housing crisis has unfortunately touched communities nationwide, including our own. Its impact has left Veterans facing homelessness even more vulnerable. That’s why we are seeking landlords to partner with our homeless Veterans program—to serve those who have served us. Do you know a property owner who could help transform the lives of Veterans in our community?
