Smiles That Matter: Celebrating Our Dental Hygienists

In recognition of National Dental Hygienist Week, we’re proud to highlight the dedicated professionals who play a vital role in supporting the health and well-being of the Veterans we serve every day.
For our dental hygienists, the journey into this field often begins with a simple spark—whether it’s early exposure to a dental office or conversations about future career paths. That inspiration grows into a lasting passion for patient care, one that continues to drive their work each day.
In a fast-paced clinical environment, our hygienists care for multiple Veterans daily, providing essential services such as reviewing health histories, taking X-rays, performing cleanings, and offering personalized oral hygiene education. While the work is highly clinical, the impact is deeply personal.
A key part of their role is helping Veterans feel comfortable—especially those who may experience anxiety about dental visits. By taking time to listen, explain each step, and provide gentle, compassionate care, they create an environment where Veterans feel at ease and supported. As Kimberly Deloach, a dental hygienist who's worked at VA for 22 years, shared, “I like to talk with patients and understand why they might be anxious and then talk them through what we will do that day.”
One of the most rewarding aspects of their work is seeing immediate results—especially when a Veteran who hasn’t had a cleaning in years can finally see and feel the difference. These moments serve as powerful reminders of how important oral health is to overall well-being. “Helping the Veterans daily by keeping a healthy oral hygiene and a smile on their face is what keeps me passionate about coming to work every day,” said Kayla Jenkins.
Our dental hygienists also emphasize that care doesn’t stop in the clinic. Since Veterans typically visit only a couple of times a year, maintaining a strong at-home routine is essential. As Kimberly noted, “They only see us twice a year, so their at-home care is most important.” Brushing twice daily, flossing regularly, using mouth rinse, and staying consistent with routine visits all play a critical role in long-term oral health.
Together, their work reflects a shared commitment to excellence, compassion, and Veteran-centered care. Whether it’s easing anxiety, improving confidence, or supporting overall health, their impact goes far beyond the dental chair.
During National Dental Hygienist Week, we celebrate the skill, dedication, and heart of our dental hygienists—professionals who help every Veteran leave with more than just a cleaner smile.
