VA’s Mobile Prosthetic and Orthotic Care (MoPOC) program has transformed access to specialized health care for Veterans in rural areas. Casey Kinney, a patient of the Lexington VA Health Care System, is one of those patients.

In April 2020, Casey Kinney stopped on his way home due to a downed tree. While taking a photo to send to his neighbor, another tree fell on him. His injuries were extensive, broken femur, and ribs in multiple locations, punctured lungs, and various spinals injuries which caused his paralysis.

Casey spent several months receiving care at the University of Kentucky Hospital and then Cardinal Health for rehabilitation. He felt alone, did not think anyone was going to help him at the VA because it was not a service connection injury. His primary care provider got the ball rolling, ensuring that he had everything he needed to feel somewhat normal again.

VA Spinal Care Injury and Disorders have a regional treatment center in St. Louis, where Mr. Kinney went and was amazed at all the treatments and services available to Veterans. While he has some appointments and treatments at the Lexington VA Health Care System, the Mobile Prosthetic and Orthotic Care (MoPOC) provides at home care.

MoPOC provides accessible prosthetic and orthotic services, focusing on serving Veterans where they are, offering convenience and comfort. Lexington VA Health Care System’s MoPOC currently serves Morehead and Somerset VA Community Clinics, as well as some home visits. For more information, call the Lexington VA at ext. 3581
