Bindu Swaroop MD

Dr. Swaroop began her career at VA Long Beach Healthcare System (VALBHS) in 2008, after completing her post-graduate medical education and chief residency at the UCLA-VA training program. Dr. Swaroop initially served in primary care, later transitioning to the hospitalist program where she was recognized for her dedication to providing patient centered care. In 2013, Dr. Swaroop was recruited to the University of California, Irvine where she became the Program Director for the UC Irvine Internal Medicine Residency Program and Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Medicine. In these roles Dr. Swaroop developed a passion for coaching, mentorship, and faculty development. In 2018, she co-founded the LIGHT Program (Leading through Inspiration, Growth and Teaching) with a mission to create a community of educators and leaders collaborating through innovative faculty development and research. In 2020, Dr. Swaroop re-joined the VALBHS, as the Chief of Medicine Healthcare Group, overseeing 14 sections spanning emergency medicine, inpatient care, and outpatient specialty clinics. 

Throughout her tenure Dr. Swaroop has been recognized for her leadership and teaching. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions across various institutions including Teaching Attending of the Year, Physician of Excellence, Doctor’s Choice Award, and Innovation in Mentoring. Dr. Swaroop has also participated in numerous process improvement events, working to advance access to care, enhance quality, safety and improve the Veteran experience. 

As Acting Chief of Staff, Dr. Swaroop brings over 17 years of healthcare experience with a focus on fostering an environment in which staff and Veterans can thrive.  It is her desire to inspire future generations of physician leaders in their growth and foster a culture of learning and collaboration at all levels within the VA.
