Dr. Daniel McGrath is a distinguished nursing leader with more than 16 years of progressive service within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).
His career is defined by operational excellence, collaborative leadership, and a steadfast commitment to advancing the quality and safety of care for Veterans.
Dr. McGrath began his career at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System as an intensive care unit (ICU) nurse specializing in cardiothoracic post-surgical critical care. His clinical expertise and dedication to continuous improvement led to his selection as a Critical Care Nurse Educator, where he enhanced professional development programs and strengthened interdisciplinary teamwork. He later served as Nursing Supervisor and Transfer Office Coordinator, overseeing hospital operations and guiding the organization through the complex challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, he earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Executive Leadership, published an evidence-based project on behavioral crisis intervention, and achieved Nurse Executive Advanced Board Certification (NEA-BC).
In 2022, Dr. McGrath was appointed Chief of Inpatient Medicine Healthcare Group at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System, leading one of the facility’s largest and most complex service lines. In this capacity, he directed initiatives to modernize operations, improve communication, and strengthen alignment with organizational priorities. His success in advancing readiness and regulatory excellence led Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) leadership to engage him in supporting regional Joint Commission preparations.
Recognized for his strategic acumen, commitment to nursing excellence, and ability to drive sustainable results, Dr. McGrath was appointed Acting Deputy Associate Director for Patient Care Services (DADPCS) at VA Long Beach. In this executive capacity, he continues to promote high-reliability practices, data-driven decision-making, and a culture of professional growth—ensuring that excellence and Veteran-centered care remain at the core of all operations.
