Substance abuse treatment program
Welcome to the Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP). We support the health, readiness, and well-being of Active-Duty military personnel by providing comprehensive substance abuse screening, treatment, continuing care, and referral services. We serve service members stationed at Naval Station Great Lakes and military installations throughout the Midwest.
How to access care:
- Command referral: Patients are frequently referred by the Drug & Alcohol Abuse Prevention Assistant (DAPA or service branch equivalent) at their command.
- Self-referral: You do not have to wait for a command referral. We strongly encourage self-referrals for anyone who would like to speak confidentially with a counselor.
Services
SARP provides drug and alcohol abuse assessment, consultation, education, outpatient treatment, intensive outpatient treatment, and continuing care services for all Active-Duty adults. Patients referred to outpatient, intensive outpatient, and residential care will be in treatment for full days throughout the duration of the program. All patients are required to arrange Temporary Additional Duty (TAD) orders prior to attending. Those traveling from out of the area must also arrange their own berthing at a local Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (BEQ).
Treatment levels
Prime For Life (Level 0.5)
This virtual three-day early intervention or prevention evidence-based, motivational program is designed for people making high-risk choices with their drug and alcohol use. This level provides a judgement-free way of understanding how alcohol and drug-related problems develop, what we can do to prevent them, and why sometimes we need help. This level is generally for members with no diagnosis.
Outpatient (Level 1)
This is an in-person two-week program (Monday-Friday) designed primarily for patients diagnosed with substance abuse disorder mild. This model of treatment is designed to teach members responsible use while developing a responsible drinking plan, as well as providing information on healthy alternatives to substance use and abuse. Treatment involves participation in small and large psychoeducational groups, individual counseling, workshops, task groups, and 12-step meetings.
Intensive outpatient (Level 2)
This is an in-person four-week program abstinence-based program for members who are diagnosed with substance abuse disorder moderate or severe and/or are determined to need an abstinence-based treatment program. Treatment consists of participation in group counseling, workshops and task groups, and 12-step meetings.
Residential (Level 3)
This is an in-person 5 week (average 35-day) residential abstinence-based program for patients diagnosed with moderate to severe substance use disorders. This level of treatment is appropriate for patients who are unlikely to be able to sustain abstinence throughout treatment. Patients meeting criteria for residential programming will be referred to a military or Tricare-approved treatment facility.
Continuing care
This program is available for all patients following intensive outpatient and residential treatment programs. Patients will participate in these groups for up to one year after residential or intensive outpatient treatment concludes. Weekly groups provide the patient an opportunity to work with trained professionals as they apply things learned in treatment in their daily lives.
Continuing care is also open to past patients who wish to get more support for their sobriety. Groups convene Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1 p.m. in-person.
