Dr. Nathaniel Cooney was appointed to the role of Associate Director for Ambulatory Care Operations effective January 27, 2025.
Dr. Cooney earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Oklahoma State University, and in 2012 began his VA career as a Psychology Intern at the Dayton VA Medical Center in Ohio, which is also the state where he was born and raised and where his family still resides. Following his internship year, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS), and afterward, assumed a position as a Staff Psychologist with the PTSD Clinical Team. In 2016, he was appointed Associate Director of an Interprofessional Fellowship program at CAVHS, and in 2019, he assumed responsibility for managing PTSD services at the facility.
Dr. Cooney joined the VA Maine family in March of 2021 as the Associate Chief of Staff for Mental Health Services, where he has supported the growth of the service line as well as the implementation of integrated program management models and recovery-focused mental health care for our Veterans. Throughout his time at VA Maine, Dr. Cooney graduated from VA’s Healthcare Leadership Development Program and has been involved in a number of initiatives across the facility in support of our strategic objectives throughout his tenure. He is very passionate about VA’s mission, and he is deeply committed to supporting VA Maine’s continued success.
Dr. Cooney has been married to his wife, Anna, for 11 years, and they currently make their home in Hallowell. They are active in their faith community and enjoy spending time outdoors (especially excursions to Maine’s beautiful rocky coastline), attending live music and theatrical performances, and hosting family, friends, and colleagues in their home.
