Celebrating a Century of Dedication: Effingham Honors Veteran George Mette's 100th Birthday

In a heartwarming celebration, the community of Effingham, Illinois, gathered on August 6th, 2023, to commemorate the 100th birthday of Veteran George Mette.
Mr. Mette, who served in the Navy as a shore patrol during World War II, has led an extraordinary life filled with service, entrepreneurship, and devotion to his community.
Over the course of his century, Mr. Mette has successfully raised seven children and owned a thriving lumber yard, which his son continues to operate today. An active parishioner of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Mr. Mette has been a fixture at every home basketball game for the St. Anthony's High School team, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his local community.
It was a true honor and pleasure for the Effingham CBOC staff to present Mr. Mette with a letter from Denis McDonough, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, and a service coin, commemorating and thanking him for his dedication to our country all those years ago.
The Effingham community is humbled and inspired by Mr. Mette's remarkable life, filled with service, entrepreneurship, and a deep devotion to family and faith. This centenarian celebration is a testament to the enduring spirit of our nation's veterans and a reminder of the profound impact they have had on our lives.
