Martinsburg VA Medical Center announces Daisy Award Recipient

PRESS RELEASE

August 20, 2024

Martinsburg , WV — The Martinsburg VA Medical Center announced the recipient of the nationally recognized Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses, Vicky Russell of Greencastle, Pennsylvania.

Russell has been a nurse for 25 years, including 21 years with VA. She currently works as the Unit Based Educator on the Acute Care Medical-Surgical Unit (4A).

“I decided to be a Nurse after seeing the care and compassion provided to my Father when he was ill,” said Russell.  “I saw the impact a Nurse can make and decided I wanted to be that person. So I went to Nursing school.”

Russell is also a Veteran and says that has helped her in her VA career.  “I understand the way Veterans think and can combine that with my nursing because I’ve been there,” said Russell.

The Daisy Nurse Award is a quarterly award given by Martinsburg VAMC for exceptional care. Russell received the Daisy Nurse Award for April through June 2024.

The Daisy Nurse Award was created in 1999 by The Daisy Foundation, a national non-profit.  Nurses are nominated by patients or coworkers. Today, the award recognizes the hard work and sacrifice of nurses in 5,400 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing in all 50 states and 35 additional countries and territories.
