Baltimore , MD — The American College of Physicians has awarded Dr. Daniel Morgan, chief of Epidemiology at the VA Maryland Health Care System, the Alvan R. Feinstein Memorial Award.
Morgan, an internal medicine physician and epidemiologist, has developed an international reputation as an expert on improving how patients are diagnosed and how to best use patient isolation in health care. A professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine where he directs the Center of Innovation in Diagnosis, Morgan has established himself as a one of the true luminaires in preventive medicine. Morgan also has developed an online game, available on the testingwisely.com website, to teach the art and science of diagnosis to medical students.
“We are thrilled that Dr. Morgan is being recognized for his innovative work that strengthens clinical diagnosis and improves patient outcome.,” said Dr. Sandra Marshall, chief of staff at the VA Maryland Health Care System. “As a teaching facility, we are especially excited that he and his work play an important role in the education and training of the next generation of physicians.”
Morgan has mentored nearly a dozen PhD candidates in addition to numerous medical and undergraduate students and graduate physicians in training. He has also worked as an attending physician on medical units and provided invaluable knowledge of infectious diseases. Aside from his work as a physician, researcher and university faculty member, he founded the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology Research Network and serves as its first director.
Morgan has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and has written numerous editorials published in consumer newspapers, contributing to a better understanding of epidemiology for non-medical readers.
Founded in 2002, the Alvan R. Feinstein Memorial Award, recognizes physicians who have made a major contribution to the science of patient care in activities that Dr. Feinstein broadly defined as clinical epidemiology or clinimetrics, involving the direct study of patients’ clinical conditions. This award honors the late Dr. Feinstein, internationally recognized as the father of clinical epidemiology.
