A volunteer with many skills

Congratulations to Scott Plaisance, our latest Volunteer of the Month. Plaisance, an Army Veteran, was stationed in South Carolina, Georgia, Germany and finished his service at Fort Hood, Texas in 1984. The VA was always in the back of his mind, so after retirement, he started volunteering in 2022.

Plaisance's mantra is simple, and it guides his volunteer work. “All you have to do is open the door and say, ‘Thank you for your service. What branch were you in?’” said Plaisance, and the socializing begins. He says that socializing with Veterans is one of his favorite things about volunteering at the Minneapolis VA. He also feels really good about being a part of the Veteran community because of the shared values that never seem to leave you.

“His friendly and helpful demeanor makes him an invaluable resource for his fellow Veterans, regardless of the situation or task at hand,” said his recognition nominator.  “He is always ready to lend a hand or offer guidance, reflecting a level of care and empathy that resonates deeply with the community.”

Plaisance has been an integral part of the volunteer team for a number of years. Most recently helping Veterans in modernizing their log-in accounts to sign into MyHealtheVet.

He has also been involved with the VA Pop-Up Food Pantry since its inception last May. He takes it upon himself to ensure everything runs smoothly, from sorting and organizing donations to weighing and categorizing food items. Plaisance’s commitment to food-insecure Veterans is evident in every interaction.  Not only does he assist in set-up, he also helps Veterans navigate through the pantry and aids them in carrying out their food boxes.

Prior to his Pop-Up Food Pantry and My HealtheVet work, Plaisance volunteered as a driver for the Volunteer Transportation Network, a program that collaborates with Disabled American Veterans to significantly enhance Veterans' access to essential care.

Again, congratulations Plaisance for his outstanding service, both as a volunteer and a fellow Veteran. His impact is felt deeply within the Minneapolis VA community, and his commitment to serving those who served remains an inspiration to all.
