Dedicated to service, in and out of uniform

Congratulations to John Walker, our volunteer of the month!
John Walker, a proud Vietnam-era Veteran, has dedicated his life to service, both in and out of uniform. In 1974, Walker began his military career by joining the Army National Guard's Mechanized Infantry Division, where he served for six years. During this time, he was assigned to the esteemed 1st Cavalry Division, 155 Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT), the largest unit in the Mississippi National Guard, with roots dating back to 1798.
After his honorable military service, John transitioned to a career in the civilian sector. He spent 13 years working as a Contract Administrator for the University of Minnesota. Following his tenure at the university, he joined Ford Motor Company, where he spent six years managing the training center and leading a transitions team.
Walker’s commitment to leadership and service extended beyond his professional career. He took on a range of leadership roles within the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization, including serving as Past Commander of DAV Chapter 2 in Saint Paul, MN, and as Treasurer of the DAV of Minnesota Foundation. His influence also reached the national level, where he served on the National Membership Committee and as Chief of Staff to the National Commander.
John is a familiar face at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center, where he volunteers to support Veterans. He comes in and spends time with DAV inpatients monthly, offering his companionship and support. He is especially active during the holiday season, spreading joy by passing out cards and non-monetary gifts to patients. On National Donut Day, he brings sweet treats to brighten the day of the patients. Additionally, John is one of the standout volunteers at the Veteran Pop-Up Food Pantry, where his dedication and hard work make a noticeable difference.
Walker’s efforts are deeply aligned with the mission of DAV of Minnesota, which aims to empower disabled Veterans to lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity. In recognition of his decades-long commitment to Veteran advocacy and leadership, John was recently appointed as the DAV Department Commander, a role he embarks on during the organization's 100th anniversary year.
“Commander Walker represents the best of our mission — his leadership is rooted in service, purpose, and action,” said MN DAV Adjutant Stephen “Butch” Whitehead. “We’re proud to have him at the helm as we step into our next 100 years.”
Minneapolis VA is equally proud to have John as part of their volunteer service. His unwavering dedication, both in his professional career and his volunteer efforts, exemplifies the highest ideals of service and support for Veterans.
