Diving into Service: A VA Volunteer's Inspiring Story

By Don Checots, Minneapolis VA Volunteer, Air Force Veteran
Meet Reeve Lasky, a master scuba instructor and devoted VA volunteer whose life has been a journey of adventure and giving back.
Lasky’s professional diving experience spans thirty years and has taken her from the mining pits of northern Minnesota to the Galapagos Islands. Here in Minnesota, she was one of the divers at the Mall of America Aquarium that fed the sharks. Yes, she swam with the sharks.
But, it was growing up with parents that served in the military that gave Lasky an appreciation for service and getting involved with the VA.
Her father served in the Army Air Corp and her mother served in the Army and the medical field.
Helping with her father’s medical care at the VA over many years, sparked Lasky’s desire to volunteer. So, she became a first impressions greeter.
Just as diving requires navigating through unpredictable waters, her volunteer work helps patients navigate life’s challenges. Her story is a testament to the power of combining personal passions with a commitment to serving others.
Her journey from being a kindergartner that told time 24-hour military style to becoming a master scuba instructor and VA volunteer is truly inspiring. It’s clear that her upbringing and exposure to the military way of life shaped her into a compassionate and dedicated individual. Her commitment to helping others and honoring her parents’ legacy makes a positive impact on those she meets.
Lasky has been doing volunteer work at the VA for nearly 15 years and has accumulated over 2,600 hours of hugs and smiles for our VA community. A smile, a hug and doors open with our patients and visitors.
Join us in congratulating Reeve Lasky, our VA volunteer of the month.
