“These events have provided a successful and convenient way for people to properly dispose of cell phones, laptops, tablets and other electronic devices. We need these items to refurbish and distribute to Veterans at no charge.”

Dutch Schult, a local service-disabled Army Veteran and small business owner, has offered free electronic recycling throughout the month of August for Veterans, visitors and employees at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center since 2023.

What is special about taking someone else’s old trash? Schultz volunteers his time and expertise to sponsor collections of small electronic devices which are then refurbished and donated to Minnesota Veterans through various organizations on a first come first serve basis.

“These events have provided a successful and convenient way for people to properly dispose of cell phones, laptops, tablets and other electronic devices.  We need these items to refurbish and distribute to Veterans at no charge,” said Schultz. “Thank you VERY much for the opportunity to be of service. As a Veteran myself, I appreciate the recycling program!”

So far, collections this year have been close to previous years. This includes 42 cellphones, 21 laptops, 10 tablets, and 57 pounds of miscellaneous electronics (cables, power supplies, etc.), totaling 199 pounds. Last year the program collected 22 cellphones, 21 complete laptops, 8 tablets, and 53 pounds of miscellaneous electronics (cables, power supplies, etc.), totaling 283 pounds.

There are environmental risks associated with old electronics in landfills. Recycling of these devices reduces the hazardous waste generated by improper disposal of these items.  Together we can commit to sustainability and minimizing environmental impacts.

So next time you upgrade to a new device, don’t throw the old away! What one person may consider worthless could be highly prized or valued by someone else “one man's trash is another man's treasure.”

Consider visiting your local county website for information on recycling or visit us at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center next August and look for Dutch!
