This is a moment to acknowledge and celebrate the exceptional work being done for lung cancer patients at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center (JHQVAMC). The unwavering commitment and dedication to providing top-notch care are truly commendable.

The ION Robotic Assisted Bronchoscopy platform, utilized at JHQVAMC, embodies innovation in lung biopsy procedures. Developed by Intuitive Surgical, the creators of the DaVinci Surgical Robot, this platform was launched nationwide in 2019. It provides a new, advanced method to perform lung biopsies. By using a robotic-assisted catheter driven by the provider, it enables the biopsy of complex, hard-to-reach lung nodules. This is particularly significant because diagnosing early-stage lung cancer in these challenging areas used to be problematic. However, with this technology, small, complex lung nodules can be diagnosed early, drastically improving patient survivability and overall outcomes.

The dedicated healthcare professionals at JHQVAMC, including Dr. Farrow, Dr. Deshazer, and Dr. Warsy, have embraced this cutting-edge technology. Their expertise and dedication will soon be marked by a significant milestone: surpassing their 175th ION procedure this Thursday, 7/24/25.

In addition to the ION robotic platform, the team has integrated 3D Advanced Imaging with the Siemens CIOS 3D Mobile C-arm. This combination allows for intra-procedural CBCT imaging, providing real-time updates on target nodule location and precise visualization of tool placement during biopsies, thereby enhancing diagnostic capabilities.

The quality of care offered with these advanced technologies is exceptional, making JHQVAMC one of the few facilities in the United States to provide this level of care for lung nodule patients. โ€œItโ€™s truly exciting to know that this cutting-edge quality of care is happening in OUR Operating Room, here at Mountain Home!โ€ said Runae Conner, RN, OR Charge Nurse.

A special mention goes to Dr. Farrow, who has been a key figure in the program since 2023. Dr. Farrow continues to deliver outstanding care to pulmonary patients. His resilience and dedication serve as an inspiration to many and exemplify servant leadership focused on providing exceptional healthcare to VA patients.

We deeply appreciate the endoscopy/pulmonary team's outstanding performance in ION robotic procedures. Their dedication and skill have set a new standard for minimally invasive lung biopsies, improving patient outcomes and care. Their use of the Ion Endoluminal System for precise biopsies demonstrates their commitment to technological advancement. The teamโ€™s efforts have improved patient care, reduced complications, and enhanced efficiency. Their achievements and impact on patientsโ€™ lives are recognized and celebrated. I am truly grateful for their unwavering commitment to exceptional care for our Veterans, making a real difference every day.

This message is a heartfelt acknowledgment of the fantastic work being done at JHQVAMC and strides being made in lung cancer care are truly something to be celebrated.
