Defending the Legacy: James Thompson's Journey from VA Hero to Army Soldier

By Daniel Ackerman, Acting PAO
In honor of the 250th birthday of the United States Army, we are proud to commemorate two and a half centuries of unwavering service and dedication to the nation. Embracing the theme "This We’ll Defend," we invite our partners and community to celebrate this historic milestone with us.
Throughout our storied history, we have been privileged to witness countless acts of valor, patriotism, and courage by our Soldiers who have steadfastly defended our nation’s freedom.
One such inspiring story is that of James Thompson, a devoted VA employee who has spent the past three years working for the Veteran Canteen Service at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. As we honor the past 250 years of Army service, we also look ahead to stories like James's, highlighting the new generation of Soldiers carrying forward the legacy of defense and dedication.
James will be departing on July 15, 2025, to join the US Army Reserves, embarking on an exciting new chapter in his life. His journey will begin at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, where he will endure 10 weeks of rigorous Boot Camp. Following this, he will undertake 46 weeks of specialized training as a Medic and radiology technician at Ft. Sam Houston. James’s commitment to his physical fitness through his passion for the gym has prepared him well for the challenges that lie ahead.
James drew inspiration from multiple sources: his grandfather, who served honorably in the Air Force, his step-father, a respected US Army Ranger, and the numerous Veterans he has met during his time at the VA Medical Center. Their stories of service and sacrifice have fueled his own desire to contribute to the defense of the nation. Reflecting on his decision, James states, "I'm joining the Army to better myself and to provide a better career path for my future."
His tenure at the VA has been nothing short of remarkable. On two separate notable occasions, his quick thinking and keen observation allowed him to recognize Veterans in urgent need of medical attention, ultimately saving a Veterans life. Terra Combs, the VCS Canteen Chief, remarked on his impact, "This young man has become a Superhero for the Canteen, and we will miss him for the year that he is gone, but do appreciate his willingness to serve his country."
As we celebrate the 250th birthday of the US Army, we are reminded of the countless individuals like James Thompson who continually embody the spirit of service and sacrifice. His story is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Army, highlighting not only the strength and resilience of its Soldiers but also their remarkable contributions to our communities. This We’ll Defend, today and always, through the heroic endeavors of individuals who stand ready to serve and protect our nation.
