On January 14, 2025, the New Mexico VA Health Care System hosted an impactful in-person and live-streamed Town Hall event for Veterans, their families, and caregivers from across the region. The event took place at the Education Auditorium of the Albuquerque VA Medical Center, featuring the Executive Leadership Team and various subject matter experts who fostered open dialogue about the vital services and pressing concerns of patients.
The evening began with a warm welcome from Dr. Breton Weintraub, the Director of the New Mexico VA. He expressed gratitude to the attendees and reaffirmed his commitment to improving Veterans' care. “Your service and sacrifice have shaped this nation. Now it’s our turn to ensure you receive the timely and world-class health care you deserve,” he stated, setting a positive tone for the proceedings.
Dr. Weintraub introduced a panel of leaders dedicated to enhancing the Veterans’ experience, including Matthew McGahran, Associate Director, and Gurujot Khalsa, Chief of Staff, among others. Throughout the meeting, attendees had numerous opportunities to ask questions and provide feedback, creating an engaging and interactive atmosphere.
Dr. Weintraub highlighted a series of significant improvements aimed at enhancing patient care and operational efficiency. The facility has implemented advanced telehealth services, allowing for more accessible consultations and follow-ups, especially for patients in remote areas. Additionally, a new electronic health record system has been introduced to streamline patient information management, resulting in quicker and more accurate data retrieval. The hospital has also expanded its emergency department to better accommodate increased patient volume, ensuring timely access to care during peak times. Furthermore, a range of wellness programs has been initiated, focusing on preventive care and holistic health, which aim to keep the community healthier and reduce hospitalizations. These updates reflect the hospital's ongoing commitment to providing top-notch healthcare services and improving the overall patient experience.
The announcements concluded with an emphasis on the importance of the upcoming SHEP Survey, designed to gather feedback to enhance the services provided to Veterans. Participants were encouraged to complete and return the survey promptly to ensure their voices are heard.
The Town Hall was not only an opportunity for information sharing but also a chance for the community to come together. Attendees were encouraged to participate actively, both in person and via Facebook Live, fostering a connected environment where Veterans could express their thoughts and concerns.
“Tonight is about you,” Dr. Weintraub remarked. “Your feedback and questions shape the programs and services we provide. We are here to listen.”
Many attendees seized the opportunity to speak directly with their leadership team. A significant number of questions revolved around enrollment, benefits, and upcoming changes in administration and community care. The team responded based on their areas of expertise, often collaborating to provide comprehensive answers.
The presence of local representative Anthony Gonzales from the Veterans Benefits Administration allowed Veterans to ask claim-specific and general benefits questions on-site. Veterans were also given the opportunity to fill out and submit recommended forms for expedited solutions. The VBA promised to review submissions and follow up with requesting Veterans.
The New Mexico VA's dedication to its mission was evident throughout the evening, and the Town Hall served as an inspiring reminder of the ongoing efforts to honor and support those who have given so much to their country. Future town halls aim to improve the experience for attendees by extending the amount of time and access Veterans get to VBA representatives, improving audio for the live audience and leaving more time for questions at the conclusion of announcements.
For Veterans who wish to stay involved and informed, the date for the next Town Hall will be announced soon via GovDelivery, around the hospital and on all social media platforms. The format will continue to emphasize transparency and collaboration, echoing the core mission of the New Mexico VA Health Care System: to provide world-class healthcare and support to Veterans and their families, ensuring they never stand alone after their service.
