VA-NH Jacksonville Collaboration Opens New Doors for Veteran Care

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System (NF/SGVHS) and Naval Hospital (NH) Jacksonville have created a partnership to increase access to timely, coordinated care for Veterans across the Jacksonville and surrounding areas.

As part of this effort, NH Jacksonville is now providing walk-in emergency room services for eligible Veterans, expanding immediate access to urgent care when it’s needed most. 

The initiative strengthens clinical integration between the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of War (DoW), enabling eligible Veterans to receive care directly at NH Jacksonville when appropriate. Eligible Veterans needing specialty services must first receive a consultation from their VA provider, who then refers them to NH Jacksonville for the approved care. To receive services through the partnership, Veterans must be enrolled in VA health care and have a service-connected condition, be a Purple Heart recipient or a former POW.

Since the partnership began, more than 100 Veterans have received services through the joint effort.

Current services available through the partnership include emergency room services, Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Program (SARP) treatment, orthopedics, general surgery, non-oncology infusion, gastrointestinal procedures, cardiology, pulmonary care, inpatient-to-inpatient transfers, audiology, and mental health. Several of these areas are expected to expand further over the next year.

“This partnership isn’t just about convenience, it’s about dignity. Veterans deserve timely, world-class care, and now they’re getting it closer to home,” said Wende Dottor, Executive Health System Director of the NF/SGVHS.

For many Veterans, the improved access has been transformative. Baudelio Alegria, a Navy Veteran treated in NH Jacksonville’s orthopedic clinic, said the experience exceeded all expectations after being referred by his VA provider.

“It was amazing. I loved every single minute of it,” Alegria said. “It blew my mind how quick the surgery was, the follow-up, everything.”

Alegria said the convenience also made a significant difference in his care.

“VA was going to send me to Gainesville, but then my VA doctor asked if I would be open to going to the naval air station hospital,” he said. “I’m only 15 minutes away, so it was very convenient and a great experience.”

VA and NH Jacksonville leaders say stories like Alegria’s underscore the importance of the joint effort.

“This initiative puts Veterans first by reducing delays and strengthening continuity of care,” said Dottor. “The fact that more than 100 Veterans have already benefited shows the value of strong collaboration between federal health systems.”

Through this partnership, NF/SGVHS and NH Jacksonville are enhancing care delivery by reducing barriers to access and streamlining services. Continued growth is expected as more clinical teams integrate and as additional referrals are approved for services at NH Jacksonville.
