VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System’s 2025 National Salute to Veteran Patients Week

CLEVELAND — The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System celebrated its annual National Salute to Veteran Patients Week from Feb. 9 to 15. This weeklong observance, sponsored by the VA since 1978 and coinciding with Valentine's Day, honors hospitalized and outpatient Veterans.
Festivities included a Super Bowl watch party, games and a puppy parade, setting a joyful tone for the week. Activities were organized by VANEOHS’ Center for Development and Civic Engagement team, which coordinates numerous programs to provide comfort and support to Veterans, their families and caregivers.
"I just love it," said June Knowlton, CDCE officer. "Each event this week is a way to say thank you. From our joyful gatherings to quiet moments of reflection, we hope to create a sense of togetherness, celebrating the spirit and resilience of our Veterans."
The week's activities culminated in a Valentine's Day vow renewal ceremony in Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center's chapel. Veterans had the opportunity to reflect while renewing their wedding vows, allowing them to reconnect with their partners.
"It's a moment to pause, remember why they fell in love, and reaffirm their commitment," said Chaplain Amanda Nagy. "We've had many Veterans express how meaningful it was to share what their spouse means to them and to add new context to their original wedding vows."
Retired Air Force Maj. Bill Macki, who served from 1967 to 1987 and participated in the vow renewal ceremony with his wife of 53 years, felt appreciation for the VA support.
"It's an act of gratitude for another year together," Macki said. "The care here goes beyond just medical; for my wife and me, it's about respect and being part of a community that truly values us. I'm really pleased with how the VA ensures we receive the best care for our Veteran needs."
