Mr. Mareco Thomas was appointed Assistant Director of VA Northern California Health Care System in May 2026.

Mareco Thomas joins VA Northern California Health Care System from the VA Mid South Healthcare Network (VISN 9), where he served as Lead Health System Specialist to the Deputy Network Director since December 2022. Previously, Mr. Thomas served as Acting Assistant Medical Center Director for Tennessee Valley Health Care System (TVHS), a 1A complexity, academically affiliated system providing care for over 140,000 Veterans across Middle Tennessee, Southern Kentucky, and North Georgia. TVHS, a CMS 4-Star Healthcare System, includes 24 sites of care (two hospitals, 20 outpatient clinics, and two dental clinics) and 395 operational beds.

Mr. Thomas began his VA career as a Pathways Intern at the Fayetteville NC VA Coastal Health Care System. Following his internship, he held a variety of administrative and leadership roles, including Administrative Officer for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Chief of Veterans Transportation Services, Assistant Chief of Health Administration Service, and Supervisory Health System Specialist/Executive Assistant to the Chief of Staff.

A Veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Thomas served as a Medical Service Corps officer from 2007 to 2017, including deployments in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. His duty stations included Camp Casey, Republic of Korea, and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology and History from the University of Tennessee (Knoxville), and an MBA in Business Administration and Healthcare Management from Fayetteville State University.

Mr. Thomas is a graduate of the Health Care Leadership Development Program (2024B), Leadership VA (2023), VISN 9 Leadership Development Institute (2022), and VISN 6 Leadership Development Institute (2021).
