Dr. Stephen Halla joined the VA Northern Indiana Healthcare System in October 2023 as Chief of Primary Care and was appointed Acting Chief of Staff.
A board-certified family physician, Dr. Halla brings more than 15 years of clinical, operational, and military medical experience. In his role as Chief of Primary Care, he oversees 45 PACT teams across seven locations and has driven significant improvements in access, efficiency, and clinical processes.
Dr. Halla has served with the VA since 2019. His previous roles include Staff Physician positions at both the Indianapolis VAMC and the Dallas VAMC. He has also held multiple leadership roles, including three years as Section Chief at the Garland VA, followed by service as Deputy Associate Chief of Staff and Interim Chief of Staff for the VA North Texas Health Care System.
Before joining the VA, Dr. Halla served in the U.S. Public Health Service and the U.S. Air Force, holding positions such as Chief of Aerospace Medicine and Flight Commander, where he supported high‑risk operations and high‑performing clinical teams. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Medicine. His training includes a residency at Offutt AFB/UNMC, a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Ohio University (2008), and a Bachelor of Science from Virginia Tech.
